FAQ

Overwolf & the acquisition

  • Overwolf is the all-in-one platform that enables creators build, share, and monetize in-game apps. We believe that creating apps and mods is a legit profession, just like youtubers or streamers. Overwolf has been a leader in helping app developers build great apps that add value to the game experience, and with this acquisition we are expanding into game mods.

  • We see a future where in-game creators are making a fair wage from their contributions to the industry. The Overwolf platform is a place where in-game creators can be recognized and rewarded for the talent they bring to the industry.

  • After connecting with Overwolf, Twitch believed we shared many of their core values, including a commitment to supporting creators. They felt Overwolf would provide a good home for the modding community and CurseForge’s users.

  • CurseForge is a great example of how fostering a community around games creates better experiences for everyone involved. Empowering creators is what Overwolf is literally all about, and we saw a lot of synergy. We felt we could provide a good home for the entire CurseForge community - supporting both mod authors and gamers. After discussions with Twitch, we both mutually agreed Overwolf would assume leadership of the modding community. Overall though, this move marks our expansion in the market beyond in-game apps into game mods.

  • Overwolf is committed to empowering creators and we saw supporting one of the greatest mod author communities as a natural next step for us. We recognized we could give the CurseForge community a new home, one that would truly secure its future for years to come. Overwolf is here for the long run to contribute to mod development and growth.

  • For mod authors: Overwolf has been a leader in helping app developers evolve and build great apps. Now, we are expanding our focus to partner with mod authors to help them build better products and earn a living doing what they love. Overwolf is committed to help CurseForge mod authors earn 50% more by 2022.

For gamers: A dedicated CurseForge team of engineers inside Overwolf will be in charge of continuously improving the Curseforge app to be the best mod manager out there. And a dedicated team means you can count on improvements and innovation. We'll start with everything as is, and then gradually add new features and tools like global search and smart sync, based on the needs and interests of the community.

CurseForge users & gamers

  • Not at all! Over the next four months, the CurseForge mod manager for gamers will transition away from the Twitch client and will become a dedicated desktop app, as part of Overwolf’s offering of apps. The website functionality will remain as-is at www.curseforge.com

  • We’re designing the CurseForge app as a dedicated app for PC and Mac, taking inspiration from the original CurseForge client app. The new CurseForge app will offer similar functionality to the “mods” section inside the Twitch client - discovering, downloading, and managing mods and addons for supported games.

  • It’s complicated. We want to make modding a legit profession, and we want to find ways for modders to make a living. With 70-80% of ad revenue going to creators and distributed based on mod usage, we want to look into incorporating in-app ads in a way that is not intrusive. You might remember the ads on the old Curse client, before the Twitch acquisition, so we're thinking about iterating on that experience. But, in parallel - for those who do not wish to support creators, we’re thinking about ways of opting out. Clearly, subscription will be one of these options, but we’re also thinking about an opt-out without payment. Eventually, as we've seen with gaming apps, we believe non-intrusive in-app ads will support mod authors and help them invest more time and effort in their creations. That said - you’ll never see an ad in-game, just in-app.

  • No. At launch, the new CurseForge app will offer mod and add-on management only.

  • Yes. Similarly to the Twitch client, the new CurseForge app will require you to login to discover and download mods and addons.

  • No. The new app will impact performance like an average Chrome tab does.

  • We’re committed to stay as transparent as possible throughout this transition. You can learn more about the development process and see our up-to-date roadmap here.

  • We are here to build this together with the community, and we invite everyone to share with us what they’d like to see (and what they’d like to never see) at CurseForge. So please speak up - feel free to send us your great ideas over Discord.

  • We’re working with Twitch to ensure a smooth transition. Users in some areas will have their accounts transferred from Twitch to Overwolf automatically, unless they opt-out. Users in other places will need to provide affirmative consent to transfer their account information to Overwolf. Those users whose account information is transferred should see no change and maintain their mod list / mod packs. Learn more about account transfer here.

  • No. You can learn more about what data apps on Overwolf collect here.

  • We can’t share specific financial information.

Mod authors

  • Not at all. Over the next four months, the CurseForge mod manager for gamers will transition away from the Twitch client and will become a dedicated desktop app, as part of Overwolf’s offering of apps. The website functionality will remain as-is at www.curseforge.com

  • We’re working with Twitch to ensure a smooth transition. We always put creators first, and that is especially true during this season as we navigate the changes.

  • Tools and services around building and uploading mods will remain unaffected during the transition and following months. Later this year we plan to start adding additional management tools and features like analytics and more, so please share your feedback on what you’d like built over Discord.

  • For now, we’re going to keep monetization exactly the same as Twitch, which means keeping the Author Rewards Program in place. In the future, we’ll plug in additional monetization streams including reviving the CurseForge subscription option and integrating unobtrusive ads in the CurseForge app. A large portion (70-80%) of all revenue driven from subscriptions or ads will be shared with authors. We expect this to start taking effect at the beginning of 2021 and we’re pledging that at that time, that the monthly payment to each author will climb to at least 50% more than what it currently is. It is important for us to roll out these features in a sustainable time frame in order to ensure that the gamer’s experience remains at the highest quality.

  • We are determined to help the CurseForge community grow, and are committed to this multi-year journey. Some amazing things lie ahead for CurseForge, and we’d love to have you back! Please reach out at curseforge@overwolf.com or over Discord!
